Our refurbishment of the University of East Anglia’s iconic 1960s ‘ziggurat’ residences, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, revitalised 600 student bedrooms together with associated common spaces and included a complete remodelling of the shower and toilet areas.
The project involved complex phasing, and a very tight budget in the context of the structures’ Grade II* listed building status.
The works undertaken represented an initial contract of interior refurbishment of the rooms. The overall project included our design for the full refurbishment of all elements of the building (£23m).
Our development strategy for this project has been adopted as a pilot study for English Heritage to help redefine the legislation for the listed building process and the implementation of conservation management plans for large estates such as the University.
