Physics of Medicine is part of the University of Cambridge’s world famous Cavendish Laboratory. The new research facility forms the first phase in a long term plan to redevelop the entire site.
Working with the contractor Wilmott Dixon, and developing an initial concept design by BDP, rhp delivered the detailed design in close consultation with the scientists. The building accommodates state-of-the-art facilities for biochemistry, synthetic chemistry and physics, including terahertz spectroscopy and provision for future Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
The project incorporates a sedum planted roof, tubular stainless steel solar shading and exposed mechanical and electrical services to facilitate future adaptation. An assessment of environmental impact using the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) awarded the building a status of ‘very good’.
