rhp were appointed by The Hyde Group, to redevelop a redundant light industrial site in Gardner Road, Fishersgate. Families were failing to settle in the area and it had suffered such rapid depopulation that the local school was threatened with closure. Our brief was to design a scheme to redevelop the site with high quality, affordable family housing, to be developed in close consultation with Adur District Council planning and housing officers and representatives from local community groups.
Our final designs provided 6 three-bedroom family houses and 34 two-bedroom flats, all with off-street parking. The houses all have generous private gardens and the flats have either a garden or a balcony, as well as access to a communal amenity space. The flats run on a north/south axis and are predominantly four storeys, dropping to three storeys to embrace the main courtyard. The houses are all two storey, in keeping with the wider context of Gardner Road.
The scheme benefits from a large community amenity space to the south and, by situating the residents parking to the west, is afforded privacy from the nearby Fishersgate Close.
A cohesive palette of elements and materials was used throughout the scheme: predominantly facing brickwork, with panels of self coloured render, slate roofs, set-back upper storey and glazed balustrades to balconies.
The project was completed in 2010.
