Wells Maltings Update

rhp completed a detailed feasibility study, masterplan and business case in conjunction with MPCS earlier this year for the repairs, refurbishment and extension of the Grade II listed Maltings in Wells-next-the-Sea to provide a new community arts centre.

The project is moving forward, the key stakeholders have formed the Wells Maltings Trust to develop local interest and promote use of the existing facilities within the Maltings. The Trust have agreed a 99 year lease with North Norfolk District Council for the buildings and a full time fundraiser, Becky Jefcoate started on the 1 Nov to drive the project forward, we wish her well and offer our continued support to this exciting community project.

The proposals include the refurbishment of the existing Maltings to provide multi-purpose community rooms at ground floor with a new local history and maritime museum on the first floor within the historic roof structure.

The new building provides a cafe and new community and tourist information centre with a 125-150 seat flexible auditorium space above to enhance the developing programmes of the Granary Theatre and Screen-next-the-Sea film group who use the 60 seat space within the existng Maltings building.

The roof of the new building will offer a viewing gallery with panoramic 360 degree views across the unique land and seascape of the town.

The development, located at the heart of the community, on the main shopping street in the town will be an exemplar of sustainable development, designed to minimise its carbon footprint during construction and operation. The target for the new build element of the works is BREEAM Outstanding.
