Combined Colleges Boathouse

Work has recently completed on a new boathouse for the combined Cambridge Colleges of Churchill, Kings and Selwyn, together with The Leys School on the River Cam. Their old boathouse (on the same riverside site) had been identified as a ‘building that detracts’ by the Local Authority’s Conservation Area townscape analysis team and was in need of considerable repair and refurbishment to meet current standards.

The new boathouse incorporates traditional materials with crisp detailing. The design presents a fresh contemporary image whilst resonating with its environment and enhances the area. Most of the accommodation within the boathouse is now housed on the upper floor and out of the flood plain. Glass panels along the balcony were created by Kate Maestri whose work portrays the movement and rhythm of the paddles as they enter and leave the water’s surface when rowing.

The Colleges took possession in time for last month’s May Bumps and it is already in full use.
